Understanding Virtual Mental Health Treatment and Workplace Productivity

Virtual mental health treatment provides therapy, counseling, and psychiatric support through online platforms, allowing individuals to receive professional care from the comfort of their home or office. Unlike traditional in-person therapy, virtual sessions offer greater flexibility, making it easier to schedule appointments around work commitments.

How Virtual Mental Health Treatment Supports Workplace Productivity

Flexibility: Sessions can be scheduled during breaks, before or after work, or on weekends.

Convenience: No commuting time means minimal disruption to your workday.

Immediate Implementation: Strategies learned in therapy can be applied to work situations in real-time.

Improved Focus: Addressing mental health concerns can enhance concentration, decision-making, and overall job performance.

Reduced Absenteeism: Managing mental health effectively can decrease the need for unplanned time off due to stress or burnout.

Strategies to Maintain Productivity While Attending Virtual Mental Health Treatment

1.
Establishing a Structured Routine

A well-structured routine can provide a sense of stability and control, which can be particularly beneficial when dealing with depression. Consider these routine-building tips:

Set a Consistent Sleep Schedule: Adequate rest is crucial for emotional regulation and cognitive function. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

Prioritize a Morning Routine: Establishing a consistent morning routine, including healthy habits like stretching, meditation, or a nutritious breakfast, can set a positive tone for the day.

Break Tasks into Manageable Steps: Tackling work in small, manageable steps can reduce feelings of overwhelm and increase motivation.

Utilizing Workplace Resources

Many workplaces offer resources to support employee well-being. If available, consider utilizing:

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) for confidential counseling

Mental health workshops and training sessions

Flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or modified schedules

Support groups or peer networks within your organization

Communicating with HR or a supportive supervisor about your needs can help you access valuable resources without feeling isolated.

Setting Realistic Goals and Boundaries

Depression can make even simple tasks feel daunting, so setting realistic goals and boundaries is essential. Here’s how:

Prioritize Tasks: Focus on high-priority tasks first and break them down into smaller steps to make them more manageable.

Set Boundaries: Avoid overcommitting and recognize when to say no to additional responsibilities.

Pace Yourself: Take breaks when needed and allow yourself time to recharge throughout the workday.

This relatively new addition to western medicine is coming to play an important role in our understanding of how people respond to medication and substances, allowing for personalized treatment based on drug interactions, substance vulnerabilities, and likely responses to medication. This means that it’s also more and more often available for every part of medical health, including mental health treatment.

In short, it means looking at the bigger picture of how your body might handle treatments, allowing your healthcare providers to stop guessing and stop using trial and error and instead switch to something that’s likely to work for you.

Reduce Trial and Error when Receiving Medication

Mental health medications are used as a second line of treatment for many people. That often means you receive therapy such as CBT first in an attempt to give you tools to reduce symptoms. Medications might also be first line, in that you’re handed medication first and therapy second.

However, in each case getting onto medication typically takes 4-8 weeks of starting that medication and dealing with symptoms before finding out if it’s going to work for you. For many of us, we can go through this process multiple times only to find that the medications we are trying have to many negative side-effects or don’t reduce negative symptoms enough. In the meantime, you could be dealing with sleep and appetite problems, low energy, low concentration, upset stomach, headache, and sexual dysfunction. Those symptoms can go away with time, but it can be difficult to try that for 8 weeks only to find out that it doesn’t work. In fact, less than 40% of patients achieve depression remission on their first attempt at taking medication for depression.

Pharmacogenomic testing is a simple mouth swab test that gives doctors a better idea of whether or not you’ll respond to the medication. For example, they’ll look at metabolization and known reactions to the drug to determine if there are known issues or interactions. That means you can start from an informed basis and reduce the chances of trial and error.

Better Understand Dosage and Response Expectations

If your doctor takes the time to look at your metabolism and your known drug interactions, you’ll have a better understanding of which drugs to take and how much of them to take. For example, people with certain genomics will metabolize some drugs very quickly. This means they may not work at all or may work differently than expected. It’s very common for someone with a faster drug metabolism to primarily experience negative side-effects of “going onto the drug” with fewer of the beneficial side effects of uplifted or stabilized mood.

That also holds true with dosage. Normally starting a new mental health drug means starting at the lowest possible dose and then gradually increasing over time until you get somewhere that works for you. This process is long and can be a lot of hassle and can result in a lot of side-effects. If you immediately look at how you metabolize drugs from the start, your doctor can make a better prediction about what dose you need so you can start closer to the target.

Know Which Medications to Avoid

While pharmacogenomics is broader than pharmacogenetics, it can still give you a very good picture of how you’ll respond to medication. As a result, it can help you to red flag certain medications before you have to find out the hard way that you react badly to them. Here, known drug interactions are recorded, meaning that a doctor can see when a medication is probably not a good idea. For example, when Madeline Bohlman took a pharmacogenomic test, her doctor immediately switched her to a different medication because he saw that she had known interactions with her current drug. The result was that she got better results and fewer side effects – all because she took a few minutes to take a cheek swab.

The current mental health medication system means taking educated guesses about why medications aren’t reacting as predicted. With pharmacogenomic testing, doctors get more insights into why something is or isn’t working. For example, if your current drug isn’t working, a pharmacogenomic test can point out known interactions and metabolization issues. That means your doctor will have more insight into picking a medication that doesn’t interact in the same ways, so your next drug will be better instead of more of the same.

Pharmacogenomic Testing vs Pharmacogenetic Testing

Pharmacogenomic testing and pharmacogenetic testing sound very similar. Both test the genome and your DNA for potential interactions to medication. However, pharmacogenomic testing tests at a high level. It looks at your genome, how you metabolize drugs, and specific or known interactions. It’s designed to look at variances as a whole to provide fast and affordable looks into what your most likely response to a drug is. The result is you get drug recommendations that provide more effective responses ore an improved benefit profile.

On the other hand, pharmacogenetic testing looks for specific genes that are known to cause issues. It looks for individual genes that have been identified to cause issues. That normally means you should be a high-risk case or your doctor should expect that you have those genes because there are hundreds of thousands of genes that can interact with medication. For example, there are over 600 genes that influence how you metabolize something like alcohol. Looking at these on an individual level can provide very clear and concrete yes/no answers if you’re responding badly to something specifically or you have a history of a gene expression in your family. For example, if you respond badly to SSRIs, it might be because of a gene, and you can test that, giving you medical reasons to switch to another drug.

When to Use Pharmacogenomic Testing

Pharmacogenomic testing can help you improve how you are prescribed and given medication. It means doctors have more insight into what will work for you, in what doses, and why. That’s a great thing for most people. You should especially consider pharmacogenomic testing if:

You’ve tried medications in the past and they didn’t work well for you

You might need multiple medications for mental health and physical health reasons

You’re concerned about potential side effects and want to minimize those as much as possible

You’re concerned about medication not working

If you’ve decided to ask for pharmacogenomic testing, you can simply talk to your doctor. Or, if you’re going to a mental health clinic, chances are high that you can ask for and receive testing right in the clinic. Of course, you might want to discuss the treatment with your healthcare provider and your insurance provider to make sure it’s covered by your insurance. In some cases, it won’t be, but because pharmacogenomics are usually low cost, it may still be worthwhile to you anyway. Plus, it’s shown to reduce costs for your insurance provider over time, with an average of $2,918 in direct savings in hospital visits, complication treatment, and the cost of switching medication.

Few of us realize how common it is. In fact, following the global pandemic, as much as 35% of Americans experienced symptoms of agoraphobia. According to the American Psychology Association (APA) those numbers are declining as people seek out treatment and learn to cope with symptoms, but rates are still well above the normal 2% of the American population affected.

If you or a loved one is experiencing agoraphobia, it’s typically about a fear of being in a situation you can’t escape from. That’s normal after trauma, loss, or being told that leaving your home could put you and your family at risk. At the same time, if agoraphobia worsens it can become an unreasonable fear that cripples your ability to live your life normally.

As a result, people with agoraphobia often need help. And, according to Harvard University, while about 10% of people struggling with agoraphobia do recover without treatment, the other 90% do not.

How Virtual Treatment Can Help with Agoraphobia

Cognitive behavioral therapy and counseling are the two most common approaches to help people overcome agoraphobia. Both of these treatments can be delivered as part of early agoraphobia treatment via telehealth or virtual treatment. However, considering the nature of agoraphobia, it’s also important that you work leaving the home and exposure to the outside world into treatment.

You May Need Medication

A large percentage of people with agoraphobia require medication to reduce panic and anxiety during early treatment. This means that even if you’re following a virtual treatment program, you may end up with a 5-6 week prescription of Zoloft (sertraline) or Prozac (fluoxetine) to help you manage anxiety. This prescription will be very temporary and is mostly intended to help you get anxiety enough under control that you can benefit from your (virtual) therapy. If your agoraphobia is not that bad, you likely won’t get a prescription.

That means understanding triggers, figuring out what leads to feeling agoraphobic in the first place, and figuring out places in your thinking and behavior that lead to agoraphobia. That means you’ll go over your history of mental health and triggers with your therapist so you can understand why you feel anxiety and what you attach that anxiety to.

For many people, it’s about losing control. For others it’s about a specific trauma or incident. Whatever the cause, understanding it is often one of the first steps to recovering.

Learning Coping Skills

Once you understand where agoraphobia comes from and your triggers, you can start to build coping mechanisms for those triggers. Often, learning to manage agoraphobia takes two approaches. The first is exposure, where you slowly build up exposure and tolerance to the things you’re anxious about, create good experiences, and try to keep recreating those until you feel more confident and better about doing them.

The second is to create ways to handle, let off, and manage your anxiety when it crops up. That often means learning breathing exercises, figuring out distractions, finding someone to talk to, finding a calming routine, and learning to stop downward spirals and negative thought patterns that lead you towards feeling panicked in situations out of your control.

Often, that’s about recognizing when you’re being anxious and anxiety doesn’t necessarily reflect reality, understanding where anxiety is making things worse, and actively working to stop those spirals. That can be reflected in things like learning to go, “I am being anxious and it is making me feel bad, I will take a break and be right back after I feel more in control”. It can also mean learning how to tell yourself that everything is okay and anything negative is just anxiety talking.

Coping skills can take a lot of forms but they often start with awareness of your emotions and their triggers, control over your emotions, and tools to react to triggers in healthy ways. So, for example, if you get anxious when stuck in traffic, your therapist might work with you to understand that you feel trapped, and work with you to get yourself to acknowledge that you feel trapped.

Motivational Therapy

Your virtual therapy can also help you with motivational therapy or acceptance and motivation therapy. Here, you learn to acknowledge that you have problems with anxiety, experience panic in certain situations, and hopefully where that comes from. From there, your therapist will work with you to build up motivation to engage with those situations as well as trust that your therapy and your coping mechanisms will help.

That will give you the tools to work towards engaging with the outside world, even if you aren’t up for it now. And, that can be extremely important if you are suffering from agoraphobia, because in this case, you’d probably need assistance to make it to a therapy appointment out of your home. Taking motivational therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy first means you can build up those skills before starting to work on leaving your home. That lowers the barrier to actually doing the work and building the skills to get better.

Getting Help

Agoraphobia is a very normal mental health disorder. However, if you or a loved one is struggling, you don’t have to do so alone. Mental health treatment can give you the tools to manage triggers, panic, and anxiety, while working to treat and heal from the underlying causes, so you can recover your quality of life and your ability to live a normal life. Treatment may not make agoraphobia go away, but it will give you tools to cope and to live your life how you want. And, for many of us, treatment can mean sending agoraphobia into remission, sometimes permanently. Virtual treatment is a great first step and it can give you the tools to get your life back on track.
